Fashion, a reflection of the times in the evolution of society

I don’t particularly enjoy looking through old photographs, except for specific reasons, as they serve as nostalgic reminders of life. However, the changing nature of things and the profound genetic mutations of life bring about daily comparisons with the past, unfolding the most prodigious, immense, and well-kept memories of a computer’s mind. These albums of the mind contain images from years and years ago. Memories (this time I went to revisit the annual class photos) bring me back to moments from school. In the gymnasium and high school, run by Jesuits, it was mandatory to wear jackets and ties, with those mythical Britishstyle jackets (a couple of which are still in my wardrobe) trimmed in dark blue or greenish-gold, and for the more “colorful” and daring, light burgundy, with ties and socks in matching shades.

My nephew, when he was in high school, looking at those photos, said that if he had gone to school dressed like that in his time, his classmates would have laughed and asked if he was going to a wedding. With the intensity and frenzy of a life lived at full speed, while I pack my trolley (my current travel companion, once a suitcase, then a duffel bag), observing the types of garments and, above all, their cut and colors, I can’t help but reflect on the close connection that brands and major fashion houses have always drawn upon in dictating what we should wear based on customs, habits, and the ways of life of the moment. Because clothing is and will always be our second skin. >>

MILAN – Fashion is synonymous with trend, surprise, energy, vitality, and emotion. It is the embodiment of beauty, revealed through the intricate details of a garment, the pairing of accessories with dresses, and the choice of fabrics and colors.

These were the impressions we took home from the exhilarating Milan Fashion Week Women’s Collection Fall/Winter 2023-2024, which concluded on February 27th. The event was made possible with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, ICE-Agency, and the Municipality of Milan….

Fashion is a relentless force, and despite the scorching days of 2023, Milan Men’s Fashion Week from June 16 to June 20 showcased the mesmerizing Spring Summer 2024 Men’s Collections. The event boasted physical shows, presentations, and engaging gatherings, unveiling new and interesting debuts, alongside the eagerly anticipated comebacks on the catwalk.

The opening of the fashion week was spearheaded by none other than Valentino himself, who chose the cloisters of the State University as the venue for his fashion show. His collection revolved around blazers and tailored coats, cleverly paired with contemporary short shorts, exuding a sense of modernity while reintroducing the brand’s iconic Pink.

The much-anticipated debut of Maccapani, the new genderless brand by Margherita Missoni, surpassed all expectations. The collection artfully combined innovative jersey manufacturing with a post-streetwear philosophy, creating a striking blend of style and substance.

The show by Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons exuded an unmistakable flair, presenting a new vision of masculinity characterized by an unusual fluidity. This fresh approach was also reflected in the jackets of the models, seamlessly melded with the trousers for an eye-catching effect.

Among the avant-garde collections presented by renowned names such as Etro, Harmont & Blaine, Eleventy, Canali, and Tagliatore, the presence of Asian brands was notably significant. In the realm of pet integration, a remarkable ensemble of about fifteen distinguished brands has converged at Pitti Pets 2023, an exquisite showcase that elegantly unveils premier offerings in clothing, accessories, home furnishings, and pet care. Among them, the Ugo brand has truly shone by introducing its innovative line of patented bags designed for the transportation of chondrodystrophic dog breeds. These pioneering designs are meticulously tailored, catering specifically to miniature dachshunds and kanichens (5-7 kg, 55 cm average length). Crafted with artisanal finesse in Italy, the production stands as a testament to ceaseless exploration of novel solutions, material innovation, product refinement, and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques.

Among the luxuriant brands gracing the Polveriera venue, the ranks include BulloPhilosophy, Eva Machi, Hollyowl, Labart Dog, Lollipet, Malucchi made in Italy, Mon bonbon Milano, Myfamily, Omniagioia, Perro Collection, Pupakiotti Pets, Superfine Pets Luxury, and Uno Ruben. Remembering the Cannes Film Festival 2023

Every May, the entire Fashion System focuses its attention on the French Riviera for the Cannes Film Festival, an unmissable cinematic event closely intertwined with the world of fashion, boasting a high presence of international stars strutting down the Croisette’s red carpet in looks representing renowned fashion houses.

The 76th edition, held from May 16th to May 27th, did not disappoint. The opening ceremony dedicated to Jeanne du Barry, featuring Maiwenn’s film, was partnered with the iconic brand Chanel. Among the star-studded attendees during the inauguration on the Montee des Marches were Uma Thurman, exuding royalty in a regal red cloak; Michael Douglas in an elegant black tuxedo; Helen Mirren, a perfectice queen reminiscent of Elsa from Frozen; and the acclaimed Johnny Depp in Dior Homme, complete with his signature ponytail and usual
array of rings, earrings, and bracelets. Catherine Deneuve graced the event in a long blue gown, the mother of the godmother, Chiara Mastroianni, and the face of the Cannes 2023 poster.

The Eccentric Fashion of Aesthetic Surgery

It’s time to consider the current state of the phenomenon called “Aesthetic Medicine”

Today, we are witnessing an increasing mass movement of people from various generations seeking assistance from aesthetic medicine for various reasons. These range from the desire to counteract the advancing years to the need to correct personal flaws or even to bring innovations to one’s own image by realizing desires and/or following fashion trends.

These desires or dreams naturally land on the desks of plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and industry experts who strive to fulfill them through cosmetics (make-up, tricks, anti-aging creams, nutrition…), minimally invasive dermatological procedures (the famous little injections!), and more complex surgical interventions. But what are the boundaries and limits of aesthetic surgery? What are the “boundaries” to be observed? These are the questions that we, as physicians, ask ourselves every day, and not only us! The answer to these types of questions cannot be singular, of course. The perspectives are diverse, and aesthetic requests are increasingly innovative and sometimes imaginative.

But what is the right approach? When should we say “no” to certain requests? Certainly, the “psychological” aspect of the person making the request must be considered, carefully evaluating the presence of any “dysmorphic” issues with a loss of the “right evaluation of one’s own image.” Given the above, there are different approaches to practicing aesthetic surgery.

The first approach is a “conservative” one, consisting of correcting only the signs of aging. These are dermatological interventions that correct the defect without others being able to notice the correction. The second approach involves introducing innovations that remain within normal anatomy—such as fuller lips maintaining a classic shape, for example—or innovations that significantly change a person’s image. Personally, as a dermatologist, I prefer the first approach, maintaining classic form parameters with the requested innovations to prevent the person from becoming a “caricature of themselves” following treatment with the current trend of “bizarre medicine“. But what are the best products for aesthetic treatments? We will discuss this in the next edition of our Fashion Wow Magazine!
